If we thought for a second that World Wide Technology would only be St. And so we have an obligation to think beyond what we see and what other people are doing. That tells me that you can't think big enough, compared to what God can do in your life. Ephesians 3:20 says glory be to God that works within us that can do exceedingly abundantly, above all that we think, dream or pray for. What about Chapter 32, "Think Big"? What role did this lesson play in your success?Īgain I think it's about thinking outside the box. I like what Martin Luther King said as well. If you do, in due season, that will turn around to benefit you in a big way. It means seek to serve first and bring value and make a difference in someone else's life. It says seek first the kingdom of God and all of his righteousness, and everything else will added unto you. There's scripture that's one of my very favorites. But isn't a business supposed to be about maximizing profit? I've been an entrepreneur ever since.Ĭhapter 15 is "Having a Vision," which you define as a goal to benefit others in some way. That led to a company that I acquired with no money called Transportation Business Specialists. Leaving Federal Express was severing an umbilical cord. That requires people to change, because we have been taught to believe in what we see. Fear is just the opposite of faith, because faith is the substance of things hoped for and evidence of things not seen. What's the lesson here?Īnytime you get outside your comfort zone, the elements of fear begin to creep in, which dampens your faith. All those groups were about interacting, trusting, honesty, integrity, teamwork, partnership and serving one another.Ĭhapter 5 is "Adapting to Change." You talk about the time when you left your salesman's job at Federal Express and struck out on your own. I was in the Methodist Youth Fellowship, I was involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and I was a part of the basketball team as well. I was in the Boy Scouts where it was taught, I was in the church where it was reinforced, and my home life absolutely reinforced that. That began with me a long time ago in the town that I grew up in, Clinton, Mo. They won't remember what your grade point average was." However, equally as important is how will the people in that school know you ten years from now? Will they know you as a person of integrity, honesty and trust, or will they know you as something else? That will be the difference between a partnership, or them not wanting to work with you at all. And I said, "You were accepted, you're a great student and I know that you're going to do well. We were going to have some real challenges meeting the financial commitment to that school. I remember spending some time with my son before he went to a new private school. Yes, but more importantly, one of the reasons that my business is where it is today is because we learned about trust and integrity and honesty a long time ago. The second lesson is "Integrity." Were you thinking of all the recent business scandals when you wrote it? Like someone trying to start his own business? Can you imagine the ridicule and the laughter and the doubt that came his way, discouraging him? And he said to bring the animals, and his family. ![]() He believed, had faith, that there was going to be a major flood, as God told him. How about a showing of faith? He lived at a time when there was no rain. How was he an example of the entrepreneurial spirit? The first one, titled "The Entrepreneurial Spirit," mentions Noah. Your book has 52 chapters-a lesson for each week of the year, I presume. So you sow the seed with faith, and then you have to do work with nurturing and watering it, being patient with it, and making sure obviously it isn't choked by weeds-all the distractions that you have out there, the naysayers and the doubts and disbelief that people attempt to bring into your life. If you sow seeds of service and commitment and care for others, you can expect there'll be a return on that investment.īut it doesn't stop at just sowing the seed, because faith without works is dead. A very simple example that everybody understands is, "You reap what you sow." It's impossible to sow apple seeds and get oranges. I think anyone can benefit from these lessons, because these principles are universal. Need one be Christian to benefit from these lessons? We applied those biblical principles to our lives and to the business. Did you apply lessons from the Bible in building up this firm? I understand that World Wide Technology is one of the nation's largest African-American-owned businesses. ![]() It's at Salem United Methodist Church in St. We started with only two or three people in the class and today we have as many as 50 or 60 people who attend it regularly.
